Perfume Review: Sarawen Perfume Art The Blue Box Sampler (9, 10, 11)

**NOTE: THIS WAS WRITTEN A YEAR AGO**

I just won 2nd place in a perfume giveaway from SaraWen Perfume Art!

First place winner gets ALL 3 of the new Doctor Who perfumes in the FULL-sized bottle, and 2nd place gets all 3 of them in the mini-size bottle. I got 2nd place. :D

This is what I'm getting (picture and descriptions of perfumes courtesy of SaraWen):

  • *9 - What was down that hall? A noise? A shape? What is following me? Closer, around the corner, something looms, something sinister. What is it? ... A hand reaches out from behind me and grasps my own with a smile. The scent of leather, woods, chocolate, and coffee catches my senses. “Run,” he says. And I do. I run to the stars through Time and Space and I never look back. 9 is a balanced and rich leather-incense blend with hints of gourmand black coffee chocolate in the background. Perfect for all gals and guys traveling with the man in a blue box. Primary notes: leather, chocolate, oud, musk, dragonsblood, coffee
  • *10 - I'm on the moon. I was on Earth, in London, and now I’m on the Moon. But this strange man wearing a brown trench and pinstripe suit smelling of green tea, pale musk, herbs, and berries stands beside me, calming me and listening with a twinkle in his eye. A spaceship flies above us and as it lands the man grows serious. Even though I see aliens marching towards us, I do not worry. For he will save us all. 10 is a unisex tea-musk fragrance with hints of fruit over a woodsy background, bordering towards masculine. Perfect for all gents and ladies traveling with the man in a blue box. Primary notes: green tea, bergamot, musk, petitgrain, berry, aldehyde
  • *11 - I’ve waited a long time for him to return. Now with clothes that seem too big and a bow-tie slightly askew which he -insists- is cool, he seems to run on sugar and cotton candy and cream and all the wonderful smells of childhood! Now I’m grown up and it’s time to go to that big blue box and see what’s Out There. 11 is a balanced gourmand-type fragrance with hints of incense and woods in the background. Perfect for any lads and lasses traveling with the man in a blue box. Primary notes: sugar, candy, cream, coconut, black pepper, sandalwood
Of course I wanted 1st place (who doesn't?), but this is more luck than I've ever had within the past year or so, so I'm very happy and thankful.

It just saved me the $15.58 it would cost if I were to buy all three of the minis (shipping included).
Well, this is it. Remember how in my last review, I said that the Doctor Who scents will be the last lot of scents I try before I decide whether or not to ditch Sarawen perfumes forever? This is the defining moment!

If I end up really liking at least one of the Doctor Who scents, I'll repurchase the one(s) I like in the full size (this is my Doctor Who fan side emerging to tell me to waste money) along with a few more minis of the fruity florals that the owner suggested to me. If I don't like any of the fruity florals, then the only reason I'll come back to Sarawen is to replace any smells that I like, own, and run out of, but I won't actively try to go through her whole catalogue (I have that problem with Darling Clandestine; I try to get a hold of every single scent from DC regardless of whether or not it even seems like my taste. However, because DC is magical, I end up liking around 99% of the smells I get from DC. That's why it's my favorite company).

If I end up disliking all of the Doctor Who scents, then that's the end of my and Sarawen's relationship. Instead, I'll just work on finishing the ones that I bought from her shop and then go work on some more from other shops... haha.
_____

I received the samples of 3 perfumes. They are named "9," "10," and "11" and are inspired by Doctor Who's 9th, 10th, and 11th doctors.

Sarawen always sends cutely wrapped packages.

So small and cute!

Lovely handwritten note and the perfume samples.
Also as previously mentioned, I've had pretty ill luck with all except maybe 2 of the perfumes I've purchased from SaraWen. I've been obsessed with perfume for a while now, and most of the time I can tell whether or not I'll like a smell just from reading the description. However, all of the smells that I guessed that I would like from SaraWen turned out less than stellar, and so I gave myself this ultimatum: if I like the Doctor Who perfumes, I will continue to give SaraWen a chance. If I don't like them, I will ditch that company forever and save my money for companies that don't let me down.

Lined up like soldiers.
Nonetheless, I'm thankful that I got to try the Doctor Who perfumes without having to buy them. Anyway, here goes.

THOUGHTS: HOLY MOTHER OF GOD LEATHER. This is a very worn and pungent kind of leather. Unfortunately that's all I get, and it reminds me of sweaty socks. No.

I’m on the moon. I was on Earth, in London, and now I’m on the Moon. 10 is a unisex tea-musk fragrance with hints of fruit over a woodsy background, bordering towards masculine. Perfect for all gents and ladies traveling with the man in a blue box.
Primary Notes: green tea, bergamot, musk, petitgrain, berry, aldehyde

THOUGHTS: I tried this on without looking at the description while doing so. Sure enough, I get tea and herbs (basil? sage? not really sure) and a whole lot of freshness. After a while, it mellows out a bit and a tiny hint of synthetic berries emerge. It's decently pleasant and a good perfume for summer or hot weather, but still not really my thing.

I’ve waited a long time for him to return.

THOUGHTS: A tiny tiny tiny hint of sweetness (barely there), a tiny little dash of pepper, and finally coconut milk (unsweetened, raw coconut milk). It's alright, but not outstanding. On the drydown, it turns sour...

-----

Well, overall, I'm not particularly wowed by this collection because they're just not my style. Once again, I'm completely thrown off by the scent descriptions. I thought I would like 9 and 11 a lot, but they turned out as a "hell no" and "meh," respectively. 10 was also a "meh." I might consider buying 10 just for the sake of having something related to the glorious 10th Doctor, but I'll use up the sample first before deciding whether or not to do that.

As for the fate of my loyalty to SaraWen: honestly, I know of a lot of perfumes out there that smell better on me and don't do weird shit on my skin and a lot of stores that appeal more to my tastes and give me consistently satisfying purchases. I find it more justifiable to spend money on those stores and scents. This is my goodbye to SaraWen. Her fragrances are just not for me. I feel like a total asshole because there's nothing wrong with the shop and the owner is very prompt and nice, but her scents are just not cutting it for me.
